I'm working over some research on Oriental cultures for background on the Empire of Norvad in my campaign world. I'm also poking at the mess of states that made up late-medieval Germany and Italy, which are pretty young as unified nations. I'd like to get answers on a few questions, mainly about what you identify with different cultures.

What characteristics, word, concepts, for instance, do you associate with Japan? I can make a stab at samurai, katana, pagoda, kamikaze, with a side-order of noodles, really small things, ritual politeness, and a lack of tattoos.

I'm looking for concept brainstorming for: Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and possibly Mongolia, if I can dodge the whole Khan thing.

Secondly, can someone with a bit more knowledge of the late medieval world tell me if there was much to distinguish the little states? Or were they all much of a muchness? Would you know when you crossed a border - were there definite borders, even? And did the population in general know what state they were in, or who ruled them, or did they just hand over taxes and labour to the people with the swords?

What's been decided so far is that the game will be set in 1876, in a fictional city in England.

1876 is the year in which Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
